Host Carson-Newman scored three runs in the fifth inning and that was enough to send the Eagles past Lee baseball, 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Silver Diamond. The win improved Carson-Newman’s record to 9-4 while the Flames slipped to 6-4.
Lee will regroup and return to action on Saturday and Sunday when they host Lewis University (Illinois) at the “Carp”. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch and Sunday’s nine-inning game is also a 1 p.m. start.
The Flames jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning but the Eagles rebounded with the big four runs in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth.
Killan Daughtry blasted a three-run homer in the fourth to set the stage for the Eagles victory. Zach Boze and Micah Genter collected Carson-Newman’s other RBI.
A solo homer by Ryan Beamish, his second of the year, accounted for Lee’s only run. Four C-N pitchers limited the Flames to just six hits. Logan Cogburn (2-1) started and worked five innings in picking up the victory. He struck out six and walked one. Three other hurlers followed Cogburn to the mound.
Alan Smith continued his solid work at the plate for the Flames. He collected three hits in four trips to the dish. Dylan Standifer and Landon Silver had Lee’s other hits.
The Flames used eight pitchers with only one working more than one inning. Randall Coxwell started. He was followed by Alan Rickman. Andrew Franklin hurled a pair of innings, followed by Alex Butler (0-2) who allowed three earned runs and three hits and was charged with the loss. Brandon Bolt, Lance Hamilton, Michael Hendricks and Thomas Zazzaro followed Butler to the bump.
