The Chattanooga Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be making significant improvements along Shepherd Road and Airport Connector Road as part of the Airport Master Plan, officials said.
Upgrades will include traffic calming narrowed lanes, bicycle lanes, curb and gutters, pedestrian ways and sidewalks, and landscape improvements.
The new roadway cross section will consist of two 10-foot travel lanes in each direction with a 10-foot two-way center turn lane.
Officials said, "Through this project, Shepherd Road will become a high-quality public space improving the existing connection to the Chattanooga Airport."
Construction is expected to take approximately six months, weather permitting, starting this spring.
Mayor Andy Berke, Airport President and CEO Terry Hart, and District 5 Councilman Russell Gilbert will take part in a groundbreaking event on Thursday at 1 p.m.
