James Payne Smith, 66, of Cleveland, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at his residence.  

He was a graduate of Riverside High School.  He was a member of Orchard Knob Baptist Church. 

James was preceded in death by his father, Roy Smith, Sr.; mother, Clara Coleman; brother, Albert Coleman; sister, Doris Ware; uncle, Joe Burke; aunt, Ethel Pruitt. 

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Sarah Smith; stepsons, Alex Hickey and wife of San Francisco and Shawn Hickey and wife of Chattanooga; stepdaughter, Donna Hickey and wife of Chattanooga; brothers, Roy Smith of Chattanooga, Jerry Smith of Los Angeles, CA, and Jimmie  Coleman of Chattanooga; sisters, Agnes Keith of Chicago, IL, Terry Smith of Los Angeles, Barbara (Sam) Shackleford, Patricia (Percy) Shackleford, and Ruth (Horace) Boykin, all of Chattanooga; aunt, Ollie (Gene) Glover of Chicago; cousins, Tommie (Janice) Pruett and Alphelia Chitty, both of Chattanooga; a host of other cousins; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. 

He will lie in state on Tuesday, March 24, at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home with the funeral to follow at 12 noon in the chapel. Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
