UTC"S Smith Named SoCon Student-Athlete Of The Week

  • Wednesday, November 24, 2021
The accolades grow this week for Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball sophomore guard Malachi Smith as he has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week (Nov. 17-23) following his efforts on the court and in the classroom, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

Smith, who was recently named the SoCon Player of the Week on Monday, becomes just the second Mocs men's basketball player to earn the award since its introduction in 2002-03. Eric Roberston was selected twice, once in the 2013-14 season and the other in 2014-15.

Smith scored 20 points and hit a game-winning jumper with less than a second left in a 56-54 win at VCU on Saturday before going for 14 points, six rebounds and six assists in a 100-39 win over Covenant on Tuesday.
He helped the Mocs improve to 5-0 on the year and extend its non-conference win streak to 17 games.

In the classroom, Smith is a Human Health and Performance major who specializes in SORT (Sport, Outdoor Recreation & Tourism Management) and carries a 3.32 overall GPA. He also earned Southern Conference All-Academic Team honors following the 2020-21 season.

Chattanooga (5-0) returns to action on Saturday with a quality non-conference matchup against College of Charleston (3-2) at 4:00 p.m. ET as part of a doubleheader in McKenzie Arena. The women's basketball program will host Georgia State at 1:30 p.m. ET before the men take the floor.
