Lee University’s Dr. Dewayne Knight received the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society Jerry Robertson Educator Award. The announcement was made during a virtual ceremony.
“I am very surprised and honored to be named athletic training educator of the year by TATS,” said Dr. Knight, an associate professor of athletic training at Lee. “What is most special to me is to have been nominated for this award by a former student athlete at Lee University who is now a practicing athletic trainer and leader in her community.”
The Jerry Robertson Educator Award is named for former head athletic trainer Jerry Robertson of East Tennessee State University for his work in creating, implementing, and establishing the first undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program in the state. This award is given to an individual who is an athletic trainer in the educational setting and whose dedication and service to athletic trainers and/or athletic training students exemplifies their desire to learn and/or teach the profession of athletic training.
“It is my sense that serving at Lee in sports medicine has been my legacy work,” said Dr. Knight. “This work has been made possible by the support and guidance of the Lee University athletic leadership and a special group of select athletic trainers who have been my teachers and mentors."
In addition to teaching, Dr. Knight serves as the medical director of the ATEP and as the team physician at Lee. Before joining the university in 2003, he practiced privately in family and emergency medicine and served on the Atlanta Committee of the 1996 Olympic Games, where he was the venue medical director for the Ocoee whitewater events.
Dr. Knight is board certified by the Academy of Family Physicians and the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification.
“For over 20 years, Dr. Knight has been pouring his wisdom and life into our athletic training students and staff,” said Dr. Taz Kicklighter, director of the ATEP and associate professor of athletic training at Lee. “Whether in the classroom or clinic, he patiently guides our students into becoming excellent practitioners while modeling the highest level of patient care. We are blessed to have him at Lee.”
Dr. Knight is the only doctor to ever receive this award.
