Haven Temple

Haven Jones Temple was born on March 24, 1939, and died on May 22, 2021. The Lord has wrapped Haven in a blanket of love and taken her into himself forever.

She was preceded in glory by her parents, Mary Kate and Richard Jones of Chattanooga and her sister LaNelle Carleton of Panama City.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, The Rev. Gordon C. Temple; her children, Julia Haven Hudson and Gordon C. Temple, Jr. (JoAnn); her three grandchildren, Ryan and Christopher Temple and Shelby Elise Hudson; her great grandchild, Edi Faye Temple, all of Chattanooga; her sister Mary Kate Jones of !der, Alabama, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Haven was a member of the Chattanooga High School Class of 1957 and the 1959 Class of Santa Anna College in California. In addition to her favorite vocation as a wife, mother and grandmother, Haven was both a Christian business woman and pastoral caregiver for all of her active years. She held a real estate broker's license in three states for 39 years. During her husband's seminary training, she was administrative assistant in the Education for Ministry Program at the University of the South and Development Director for Dubose Conference Center in Monteagle, Tennessee. She was one of the first to establish a volunteer caregiver program for Hospice of Knoxville, where she recruited and trained over 100 lay and clergy volunteers for the Hospice program. During the years as a clergy wife in Montana, she was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Clinical Pastoral Education program in the Episcopal Diocese of Montana and later held the position of Hospital Chaplin at hospitals in Kalispell and Whitefish Montana. During this time, she held several positions in civic and professional organizations such as Chamber of Commerce and Reality Boards in several cities.

While the real estate and pastoral care fields gave her much personal satisfaction, Haven was best known by all those who knew her well as a true southern lady. Her natural abilities allowed her to be a gracious hostess and create an air of hospitality and friendship wherever she was and whatever her endeavor.

Her life will be celebrated in a private service with family and close friends at St. Martin of Tours Episcopal Church in Chattanooga followed by the internment in the Church's Memorial Garden. All attending the service are asked to bring their masks to comply with the COVID restrictions. Due to the restrictions which result in limited seating, the burial rite and internment will be offered on Zoom for her many friends, co-workers and out of town extended family. Those wishing to take advantage of this Zoom program can do so by requesting the link from the Church office at OFFICE@STMARTINSEC.ORG

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Haven's name to St. Martin's Episcopal Church or The Alzheimer's Association of Chattanooga or the Charity of your choice.

Finally, the family would like to thank the employees of Brookdale-Hixson, Brookdale-Mt. Vernon and especially the employees of Caris Hospice for the exceptional care given to Haven over the last six months of her life. Words can truly not express our gratitude for these fine people.

Rest eternal grant to her, 0 Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
