Sewanee Loses 49-27 Shootout With Hendrix

When Keegan Glaze blocked and then recovered a Hendrix punt for a Sewanee touchdown, Tigers fans in attendance had to wonder if this was to be the day the long losing streak finally ended. After concluding the first quarter leading 6-0, that fantastic scenario was appearing more and more realistic.

Then Hendrix quarterback Parker Wells ended the dream. He threw for six touchdowns over the next half-hour of game time and the Warriors blew out the visiting Tigers 49-27.

Wells threw his first scoring strike to Chris Childress early in the second quarter, and spirited Sewanee freshman Jeremiah Young answered back with a 57 yard scoring pass to the dynamic playmaker Dagem Samuel.

Wells then followed by bombing the life out of the Tigers’ young secondary, completing 17 of 21 passes for 295 yards. Childress caught three of those scores, and Colton Phillips nabbed two. Sewanee receiver Chris McCullough caught his fourth touchdown of the year in the third quarter.

The Warriors remained balanced on offense and also ran for 300 yards. Halfback Quentin Tolbert went for 123 yards and a score, and backfield mate Caleb Williams added 69 yards as well. Sewanee’s ground attack could only muster 52 yards, with Mitchel Johnson and the Hendrix defense combining for six TFL.

The Tigers (0-3) go back on the road to play their first SAA game of the year against 3-0 Birmingham Southern. After that is another home game, the famed Orgill Cup against Rhodes.
