Mary "Rita" Carter
Mary “Rita” Pearson Carter, 84, passed away after a lengthy illness on December 30, 2021, surrounded by her daughters.
Rita was born December 10, 1937, and graduated from Chattanooga High School and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles L. Pearson and Elfreida Pearson Wiggins, husband, Stanley Eugene “Gene” Carter, brother, Arthur “Sonny” Pearson and sister, Jackie Smith.
She is survived by her daughters, Erika (Frank) Brown and Laura (David) Ward, sister, Susan Swinney, grandchildren, Carter Ward and Madison “Maddy” (Aaron) Dunn, great-granddaughter, Lometa Dunn, and many beloved nieces and nephews from both her and her husband’s families.
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Rita was known for her quick wit, independent spirit, giving nature and talents in the kitchen. After her retirement as a systems analyst from TVA and Provident/Unum, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, volunteering for her church, and spending time with her family.
Visitation will be held at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel on Friday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service with Rev. Braxton Cotton officiating. Burial will take place immediately afterward at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Rev. Braxton Cotton for his weekly visits during her extended illness and to longtime family friend, Gerry Chamberlain, for her many visits and calls.
