Samuel Evans Owen III, 71, of Signal Mountain, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 14, 2022 following a brief illness.  He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Columbia, SC on April 21, 1950, to Jennie Hill Owen and the late Sam E. Owen, his family lived in several southeastern cities before moving to Chattanooga in 1968 where Sam met his future wife, Kathy.  He graduated from Hixson High School in 1969 and earned B. S. degree from Tennessee Tech in 1974.  He and Kathy were married on March 17, 1973 during the St. Patrick’s Day flood, and have spent the last 32 years on Signal Mountain where they raised their sons, Edward and Stephen.  Following college Sam served in the U.S. Army before beginning a career in the commercial sign business in Chattanooga.  He was a small business owner and operated his company, Sign Systems and Design, until his retirement.  He was a member of First Centenary United Methodist Church where he served as head usher and in later years has attended Signal Crest United Methodist Church.

Sam touched so many lives.  He was known for his big, fun loving personality, his desire to know all about the people he met, his helpfulness to loved ones and to complete strangers, his love of animals, and his willingness to tackle any project.  He took special pride in renovating the house on Possum Creek where family and friends have created wonderful memories over the years.  More than anything he loved his family and was the biggest cheerleader and supporter for their pursuits.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sam E. Owen. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, sons, Edward Owen of Murfreesboro, TN, Stephen Owen of Nashville, TN, his mother, Jennie Owen of Signal Mountain, and a large and beloved extended family.

A  Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Wade Leatherwood, Brent Leatherwood, Ron Laffitte, Andy Randall, Camden Randolph, and Jeff Simmons serving as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Signal Crest United Methodist Church, a local animal shelter, or the American Lung Association.
