James Patrick Shaughnessy, 91, passed away naturally on September 4, 2022, surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Jim was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on August 4, 1931. He was a devout Catholic, devoted husband of 68 years, and he loved his sweets. He sent men to the moon during his career with NASA and was a lifelong learner, valuing education and curiosity. He spoke several languages, sang and played the guitar, and enjoyed tinkering in his workshop. He could fix nearly anything. Jim served in the Navy Reserves during the Korean conflict, worked on trains and airplanes in addition to spacecraft, and ended his highly successful engineering career as a consultant. He received many honors and accolades over the years for his various achievements, yet he was humble. His first love was the Church, which was evident not only through his dedication to his family and work, but also through his generosity and readiness to help anyone in need, friend or stranger. He belonged to the American Legion, the Elks and the Knights of Columbus and volunteered at Ladies of Charity of Chattanooga. Jim participated in many community organizations over the years and was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was passionate about what he believed in and enjoyed telling a good story. His was a great story. He will be dearly missed.

Jim is survived by his wife, Constance; his daughter, Patricia; son, Terrance (Kathleen); grandchildren: Ryan (Laura), Christina (Jens), Daniel (Danielle), Kenneth, Jessica and James; and great-grandchildren: Maggie, Ezra, Riley, Libby, Luke and Declan. His son, Kevin (Nancy) preceded his death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, at St. Augustine Catholic, 1716 Anderson Pike, Signal Mountain. Visitation will be onsite prior to Mass.

Arrangements are entrusted to Lane Funeral Home 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, Tn. 37415, www.lanefh.com, 423 877-3524.
