Dahlia Jean Broadway Harland
Dahlia Jean Broadway Harland, 92, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
She grew up in Chattanooga, TN and attended Elementary School here and Howard High School. Dahlia graduated from Morristown High School and continued to Morristown Junior College at the age of 16. She received a dramatic scholarship to Philander Smith College in Little Rock, AR and later went on to achieve higher education from the prestige institutes of Tuskegee and Tennessee State University. She started teaching in Cartersville, GA at 19 years old and taught at Summer Hill Elementary for 7 years. Dahlia taught at E. 5th Street, Clara Carpenter, and Hill Crest Elementary all in the Hamilton County Public School system for 31 years. She retired from Dalewood Middle School in 1989. She continued work in education by becoming a Reading Interventionist at Red Bank Elementary, helping 2nd & 3rd graders along with Mrs. Belinda Milbrand the educational assistant. She also was a Title I tutor for family and children services. She loved to sing. In her words she believed that “we all understand that learning to read takes time, practice, and patience, so all students can be successful”.
Dahlia was preceded in death by her father, Jessie Broadway; mother, Leola Broadway; brother, Edward Roosevelt Bailey; sisters, Hagar Bailey Kingsley, and Gladys Bailey LaFavors.
Survivors include her son, Darrell (Olivia-Nicole) Harland; grandchildren, Amecia Harland, Joshua Harland, Jordan Casey; sisters, Evelyn Bailey Wisham, France Viola Bailey, and Fannie Luis Bailey Knowles.
She will lie in state on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Ternae T. Jordan, Sr. as the eulogist.
