Frances Moore

Frances Elizabeth Harrison Moore, 101, long time resident of Dalton, died peacefully at Universal Health Care Brunswick, Bolivia, North Carolina on January 30, 2023.

Fran was born in Shawmut, Al., on Nov. 5, 1921, and was the daughter of the late William Terrell and Susan (Susie) Rollins Harrison. As a young child she moved to and grew up in West Point. She transferred from Georgia Teachers’ College to the University of Georgia where she received her BS in Secondary Education and minored in Journalism. While at Georgia, she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Glee Club, UGA Choirs, and Education Club.

After graduation, Fran taught Journalism and English at Druid Hills High School in Atlanta. During World War II, she worked for the American Red Cross in Washington, DC. After the war ended, she worked with Dean Tate at the University of Georgia to establish the Memorial Hall with veterans and to help start the Student Union. Fran and her sister, Joyce, moved to Dalton for teaching positions. She taught at Dalton High School and was active in school activities, including coaching the cheerleading squad.

On September 18, 1948, Fran married William (Bill) A. Moore, who preceded her in death on December 30, 1994. Fran was an active member of The First Presbyterian Church and then ChristChurch Presbyterian, including Circle, Women of the Church, Choir, and she faithfully attended the Monday Bible Study Group weekly. Fran was involved and had leadership roles in many community groups and activities including Girl Scouts of America where she was President for several years, the Dalton Garden Club, the Lesche Women’s Club, and the Dalton Chapter of the American Red Cross where she and her husband, Bill, were very instrumental in expanding disaster training and readiness. Whether at church, a community activity, or club meeting, she never met a stranger and was always there to welcome newcomers and make sure that they transitioned into their new Dalton community. She was always thinking about someone else and looking after someone in need. Fran’s positive attitude and enjoyment of life, which radiated to everyone around her, were truly elements leading to her long life. Throughout her 101 plus years, even up to her last days, she touched and enriched so many lives. She was an avid gardener and floral arranger. She shared their beauty with others by giving tours or giving plants.

Besides her beloved husband, she is pre-deceased by her sisters and brothers-in-laws: Catherine and Zack Schuessler, Rebecca and Billy Macpherson, Joyce and Jack Proffitt, John McCullough, and Wells Moore, and niece, Sherry Rogers. Fran is survived by her daughter, Mayson Moore-Price, and son-in-law, Jim Price of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina; sister, Theodora McCullough of Kerrville, Texas; grandchildren, Zachary and Laura Merriman; great-grandsons, Drew and Alex Merriman, of McLean, Virginia; nieces and nephews, Clay Moore, Subie and Paul Espy, Sandy and Christine Macpherson, Rocki and Boo Proffitt, Terry and Sally Proffitt, Susan and Dirk DeKoch, Sally and Guy Goodwin, Martha and Jimmy Park; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, with viewing at 3 p.m. where family will receive friends, at ChristChurch Presbyterian Church with Rev. Eric Geil officiating. Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the Dalton Garden Club, ChristChurch Monday Bible Study Group, and the Lesche Woman’s Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family request Memorials be made to Northwest Chapter of the American Red Cross, 112 John Maddox Drive, Rome, GA 30165, or to the donor’s favorite charity.
