Retired From Chattanooga Public Schools After 44 Years

Atheria Freeman, 90, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 2, 2023.

Atheria was born on Aug. 24, 1932, to the late Johnny W. and Lillie Vines Holloway. She was educated in the public schools of Chattanooga, graduating from Howard High School in 1950. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Fisk and a master’s degree from Trevecca University. Atheria also attended The College of William and Mary and Tennessee State University. Mrs. Freeman retired from the City of Chattanooga Public Schools after 44 years.

Atheria was a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church uniting at an early age under the leadership of the Rev. W. W Taylor in 1941. She was an active member of Deaconess Ministry, Family Ministry 6, Adult Choir, Sunday School teacher and the Women’s Ministry. Atheria was a volunteer for Hospice of Chattanooga, a Diamond Life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and a member of the Chattanooga Choral Society for the Preservation of African American Song. Mrs. Freeman enjoyed singing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny W. (Lillie) Holloway; brothers, William (Bettye), and Arless (Bettye) Holloway; niece, Deja Holloway.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Edward Freeman; brothers, Fred D. (Hazel) Holloway, Laveen, Az. and Johnny (Juanita) Holloway, Chattanooga; two aunts, Seretta Renfro, Buffalo, N.Y. and Margaret Vines, Camp Hill, Al.; nieces and nephews, Fredena (Deric) Williams, Gahanna, Oh.; Arless (Tanya) Holloway, Upper Marlboro, Md., Karen Rhodes, Chattanooga, Dinessa (Robert) Solomon, Cleveland, Oh., Dwayne (Darnella) Holloway, Murfreesboro, Tn., Talitha (Herbert) Scruggs, Laveen, Az., Jay (Vanessa) Holloway, and Jeffrey (Tiffany) Holloway, Chattanooga, Juan (Aisha) Holloway, Antioch, Tn., Jeremy (Nekeya) Holloway, Frisco, Tx., and Shannon (Ashley) Johnson, Chattanooga; goddaughter, Grace Michelle Fletcher, Huntsville, Al.; a host of great nieces and nephews and cousins.

Public viewing will be held from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 2305 East 3rd Street, Chattanooga, Tn. 37404.

A 1 p.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 9, at Second Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. Ernest L. Reid as officiant.

Interment will be in Beautiful Greenwood Cemetery.
