William Fred Phillips
William Fred Phillips, 93, of East Ridge, passed away on July 30, 2023.
Fred was born on Oct. 15, 1928, in Rising Fawn, Ga., to the late Jewell B. and Joe W. Phillips. He graduated from Dade County High School, Class of 1946. Fred served his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany during his time in the military. Fred worked for and retired from Combustion Engineering where he was a boilermaker after 32 years of service. Fred was saved at a young age and was a member of Frawley Baptist Church for over 30 years. He served as a Deacon Emeritus and served on various committees. Some of Fred’s favorite pastimes were spent gardening, yard work, going to flea markets, and auctions. He enjoyed buying and refinishing furniture.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Julia E. Phillips, his aforementioned parents, and a brother, Wilburn F. Phillips.
Left behind to cherish Fred’s memory are several nieces, nephews, his long time church friend, Ann Bull, and his special friend, Terry Slaughter.
A Celebration of Fred’s life will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 6 p.m. at Frawley Baptist Church with Pastor Ken Wolfe officiating.
A visitation for friends will be held in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Tuesday Aug. 1, from 5-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Hamilton Memorial alongside his loving wife.
Pallbearers will be Mike Shavers, Tommy Manning, Tim Jones, Jackie Nelms, Scott McKee, Keith Mann, and Bob Hope. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Fred’s memory to Frawley Baptist Church Building Fund, 510 Frawley Road, East Ridge, Tn. 37412.
