Shalaka Akolkar, DO, a gastroenterologist, recently joined Hamilton Physician Group - Gastroenterology.

Dr. Akolkar says she enjoys making an impact on her patients’ lives. “I picture myself in my patient’s position or imagine they are a family member, and treat them the same way I would like to be treated.”

Dr. Akolkar medical school at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., and a fellowship in gastroenterology at UNC Blue Ridge.

Dr.
Akolkar treats patients with gastroenterology conditions, including GERD, abdominal pain, peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, liver conditions, including fatty liver, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and functional Gl conditions like gastroparesis and irritable bowel syndrome. She also performs general gastroenterology procedures such as upper endoscopies, colonoscopies, flexible sigmoidoscopies, video capsule endoscopies and manometries.

“One of the most rewarding parts of my job is doing an endoscopy procedure, finding the cause of someone’s issue and being able to fix it,” she said.
