The Covenant women's soccer team battled Belhaven in front of a big Homecoming crowd at Scotland Yard. After going up a goal early on in the game, the Scots couldn't stop the offensive firepower from the Blazers as they fell 3-1.
Leah Marr gave the Scots an early lead with a goal from the right side of the box after a clever pass from Lila Wiley in the ninth minute. Kaci Craft tied the game for Belhaven with a goal that snuck into the top-left of the net in the 27th minute.
Shortly after, Covenant had three opportunities in a matter of seconds, but Marr had two shots saved and Tyneisha Herring had her shot cleared off the line by a Belhaven defender.
In the 30th minute, Belhaven took the lead with a headed goal from Kyla Shaw off a corner kick assisted by Emma Antonoplos.
At the intermission, shots were almost even with Covenant having a 7-6 edge in its favor.
Emma Riggs and Wiley each had shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, however, both were not on frame. Craft scored her second and Belhaven's third in the 64th minute with an unassisted strike.
Lucy Sandhoff made two great saves in the final 11 minutes to keep the Scots within two goals.
Wiley had Covenant's only shot after the Blazers scored their third goal.
The Blazers outshot the Scots 16-10. Belhaven had four corner kicks while Covenant had none.
Covenant had the higher foul count at 10-6.
Covenant travels to Emory for a nonconference game at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
