Southern's Symphony Orchestra
Winners of the Southern Adventist University Concerto Competition will be featured in concert with the university’s Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Laurie Redmer Cadwallader, on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. at Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists on campus, 4829 College Dr. East in Collegedale.
Established in 1990, the annual contest features gifted young instrumentalists from across the region who auditioned and were chosen to present solos alongside a full orchestra. This year’s finalists include Riley Hale from Vanderbilt University playing Concerto for Marimba and Strings, I by Sejourne; Marilyn Iribar from Andrews University in Michigan playing Violin Concerto No.
1 in F-sharp minor, op. 14, I by Wieniawski; and Evangeline Manalo, 16, from Chattanooga State Collegiate High School playing Der Schwandreher by Hindemith.
Five of Southern’s own student musicians also earned the top honor of performing their respective solos with orchestra accompaniment: Jasiel Castro playing Horn Concerto in B-flat major, op. 91, III by Wieniawski; Matthew Kimbley playing Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, op. 30, III by Rachmaninoff; Kayla Kwon playing Zigeunerweisen, op. 20 by Sarasate; Soren Pang playing Piano Concerto in A minor, op. 16, III by Grieg; and Amelia Zimmerman playing Guitar Concerto in D major RV 93, I by Vivaldi.
