The Covenant College women's basketball team won on Friday against Warren Wilson and the men lost to Olgethorpe.
The Lady Scots opened game one of the Mountaintop Madness with an 87-69 win over Warren Wilson. After a neck-and-neck first 20 minutes, the Scots used a strong third quarter to earn an 18-point win.
With the help of two triples, the Owls scored the first eight points of the night. 3-pointers from Lucy Benson and Breezy Savage cut the lead to 10-6. Warren Wilson went on another 8-0 scoring run late in the quarter and saw itself ahead 18-10 after 10 minutes.
Benson delivered five points in the opening two minutes of the second quarter as Covenant trailed 22-17. Covenant knocked down three triples on a 14-0 run to take a 28-22 lead. The Owls battled back to tie the game at 34 before two made free throws by Cair Canady right before the half put Covenant up two.
Savage came out aggressive and scored the first five points out of halftime. The Scots got hot from downtown as Benson and Canady hit triples on consecutive possessions to make it a double-digit lead at 50-38. In her first college game, Ora Hall was a spark off the bench scoring 12 points in the quarter as Covenant led 69-43.
Hannah Eidson got her shot going, with a jumper and an inside bucket to put the score at 75-54.
Faith Wasden and Emma Kaye Fuller got on the scoresheet with a pair of made free throws.
Eidson scored two more baskets in the closing minute for the Scots as they won 87-69.
Covenant moves to 8-0 all-time against Warren Wilson. In the first game of her senior year, Savage led Covenant with a career-high 20 points and eight rebounds. Hall delivered 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting in just 14 minutes.
Eidson (13 points), Benson (12 points), and Abby Witt (11 points) also were in double-figures scoring for Covenant.
As a team, Covenant shot 44.8% (30-67) from the field and 50% (11-22) from the 3-point line while Warren Wilson was 34.9% (22-63) and 25% (4-16) in the same categories.
Covenant returns to action at 10 a.m. tomorrow against Principia for its second game of Mountaintop Madness.
OGLETHORPE MEN 99 COVENANT 94 As it has the last several years, Covenant started off the season at the Lon Varnell Classic. Matched up against Oglethorpe, the Scots played a tight game with the SAA member, ultimately falling 99-94.
Covenant's first three shots they made were triples by Adam Deininger, Fisher Mitchell, and Luuk Dusek as it led 9-7. Four points by Pierce Smith ignited an 8-0 run as Covenant stayed in front 24-16 with 11:16 remaining. The Stormy Petrels rallied all the way back as a tip-in layup tied the game at 31. Covenant immediately responded with an 8-0 highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Logan Patterson on consecutive possessions. Once again Oglethorpe came running back as a fast-break layup put it ahead 44-43 with 3:44 left in the half. The Scots scored the final six points of the half capped off by a layup from Derrius Teagle to go into the locker room up 55-49.
Oglethorpe scored the first nine points of the second half to set the tone and lead 58-55.
The two teams went back-and-forth for the next few minutes as Jake Stephen drilled a triple to make it 68-65 Scots. Dusek nailed a pair of 3-pointers as Covenant led 76-72 midway through the half.
It was Oglethorpe's turn again to go on a scoring run as it went up 82-80 after scoring eight points in a row.
The Scots kept chucking up the 3-ball and it paid off as Korbin Long and Deininger each hit a shot from downtown to make it 91-86 Covenant. Covenant went cold, missing its next six shots and losing the lead before a layup by Patterson tied the game at 94 with 51 seconds left.
The deciding moments happened at the free-throw line as Covenant committed a few fouls in the final 51 seconds that led to Oglehtorpe knocking down five free throws to squeak out the win.
Covenant moves to 4-7 all-time against Oglethorpe. Logan Patterson scored 20 points in his first game at Covenant to lead the offense. Duusek, also playing in his first game with the Scots, was next with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. The final Covenant player in double-figures was Deininger with 10 points in his first game at Covenant.
Covenant shot 40% (34-85) from the field and 31.8% (14-44) from three while Oglethorpe was 46.4% (32-69) and 34.6% (9-26) in the same statistical categories.
The Scots were outrebounded 57-40.
