In its final game before the end of the semester, the Covenant women's basketball team took on Bob Jones for some Friday night hoops in Barnes P.E. Center. The game was back-and-forth, but a dominant fourth quarter for the home team proved to be the difference in their 68-55 win.
The Scots waited almost three minutes to get their first basket with Lucy Benson getting a shot to go inside after the Bruins went up 4-0. Capped off by a layup by Abby Witt, Covenant went on a 10-0 scoring run to move ahead 12-5.
The Bruins knocked down a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to put the score at 12-7.
Hannah Eidson had the first basket of the second quarter with a 3-pointer to push Covenant's lead to 15-7. A quick 5-0 run for Bob Jones midway through the quarter that included a transition triple put them within three points at 18-15. Ora Hall buried a jumper with 3:05 left in the quarter to put Covenant up 22-17. The Bruins quickly scored six of the next eight points to jump back ahead 25-24. Right before the buzzer sounded, Breezy Savage made a 3-pointer at the top of the key to put the Scots in the lead at the intermission, 27-25.
Led on by three made triples in the first five minutes of the third quarter, Bob Jones took a 39-31 lead. Bob Jones kept making shots from deep as another triple kept them up nine with 1:55 remaining. The Scots scored seven points in the final 90 seconds of the quarter, four points coming from Hall, to cut the Bruins lead back to two points at 45-43.
The two teams traded baskets for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter as Covenant maintained a one-point lead at 55-54. A 6-0 run for Covenant gave it a little bit of cushion with the score at 61-54. The Covenant defense locked in, allowing just one point for Bob Jones in the final 5:44 of action. The dagger for the Scots came on a Benson triple to put her team up nine points.
Savage and Benson each scored late to extend Covenant's win to a 13-point result.
Covenant moves to 4-2 all-time against Bob Jones. Savage posted 20 points, six assists, and five rebounds in a game where she played the full 40 minutes. Benson scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.Witt was Covenant's final player in double-figures scoring with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Scots were 33.3% (25-75) from the field and 15.4% (4-26) shooting 3-pointers while Bob Jones was 27.1% (13-48) and 36.8% (7-19) in the same categories. Covenant forced 28 turnovers and only turned it over 17 times itself.
Covenant begins conference play on January 3rd at 6 p.m. on the road at Agnes Scott.
