Mary Ellen Ciganovich, a remarkable woman of boundless courage, compassion, and determination, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2024, in the arms of her loving husband, Peter Ciganovich, surrounded by close friends in the comfort of her home.

Born on Feb. 22, 1952, in Batavia, NY, Mary Ellen moved with her family to Atlanta, GA, at the age of four. She graduated with honors from Tucker High School in Tucker, GA, and went on to earn her degree in Education from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. A proud member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and numerous other societies, Mary Ellen's academic achievements were just the beginning of her extraordinary journey.

Diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of six and multiple sclerosis at age 34, Mary Ellen transformed her personal battles into a life-long mission of advocacy and empowerment. She became a national spokesperson for organizations supporting epilepsy and multiple sclerosis, using her experiences to inspire and uplift countless thousands through her appearances on radio, television, social media, and at conferences, offering hope and encouragement to those facing life's challenges.

Mary Ellen's indomitable spirit defied limitations. She embraced life with a fearless determination, achieving feats that many deemed impossible. Whether hang gliding from Lookout Mountain, ziplining through the Cherokee National Forest, stage 5 whitewater rafting, running the long stairs path on the Great Wall of China, swimming with sharks near Bora Bora, surfing on Waikiki Beach or helmet diving in Tahiti, she tackled adventures with passion and purpose. These endeavors, often alongside her beloved husband Pete, exemplified her belief that no challenge was insurmountable.

Mary Ellen's legacy is one of resilience, love, and an unyielding determination to inspire others to live boldly and authentically. Her remarkable life serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the beauty of a soul dedicated to helping others.

A celebration of Mary Ellen's life will be held in February on Mary Ellen's birthday for close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to organizations supporting epilepsy and multiple sclerosis, causes that Mary Ellen held dear throughout her extraordinary life.

Rest in peace, Mary Ellen. Your light will continue to shine in the hearts of all you touched.
