Covenant Women Earn Sweep Of Welch With 51-50 Win

  • Thursday, December 5, 2024

The Covenant women's basketball team returned to the court for the first time in 10 days with a home game against Welch as it looked to do the season sweep of the Flames. The contest came down to the wire and the Scots did just enough to squeeze out a one-point 51-50 victory.

Lucy Benson buried the game's first 3-pointer with 8:15 remaining to give the Scots a 5-2 lead.
A 6-0 scoring run capped off by a transition basket from Breezy Savage put Covenant ahead 12-6.
The Scots scored the final four points of the quarter to go up 16-8.

Covenant kept its scoring run going in the early part of the second quarter as a pair of inside baskets from Hannah Eidson and Abby Witt put its lead to double-digits at 20-8.  The Scots went the final 7:45 of the quarter scoreless, but strong defense kept them in front 20-14 at the intermission.

After not making a 3-pointer the whole first half, Welch made four of them in the first six minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 32-32.  The Flames took the lead right before the quarter ended at 36-34 with a transition basket.

Welch took its largest lead of the night at 41-36 after scoring five of the first seven points of the fourth quarter.  A quick 7-0 run for Covenant with five points scored from Benson put the Scots back on top at 43-41. Eidson buried a triple for the Scots with 3:14 remaining, which turned out to be her team's final points of the night with the score at 51-46.

With Covenant up two points and four seconds left in the game, Welch drew a shooting foul, but Keonna Chumbley made only one of her free throw attempts to keep Covenant in front. Welch had one final chance to get the win, but a last-second 3-pointer was blocked by Witt to end the game.

Covenant moves to 2-0 all-time against Welch. Witt led the Scots with her first double-double of the year, posting 11 points and 14 rebounds, which tied her career-high. Savage did a little of everything for Covenant as she totaled 12 points, a career-high seven steals, and six rebounds.

Covenant's final double-digit scorer was Benson with 12 points and five rebounds. Covenant shot 29.5% (18-61) from the field and 17.9% (5-28) from behind the 3-point line while Welch was 34% (18-53) and 22.7% (5-22) in the same categories.

The Scots had 26 turnovers and forced 25 turnovers on the Flames. Covenant dominated the glass, outrebounding Welch 46-29.

Covenant returns to the court on Dec. 13 at home against Bob Jones for its final game before Christmas break.
