Peggy Ann Close Williams died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, May 18, 2024. She turned 90 on March 7.

Peggy is survived by two daughters, Christina Monroe and Sonja Williams, a son, Gary Benford, seven grandchildren; Alex Monroe, Rachel Wright, Jennifer Benford, Amy Beal, Miranda Wilson, Dena Abston, Mallory Browning, ten great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray E. Benford (Christina and Gary’s father) and husband, John S. Williams (Sonja’s Father).

Peggy and John moved to Chattanooga in the winter of 1966. While in Chattanooga she worked at Loveman’s Department Store. After moving to Mississippi, she worked at Goldsmith’s Department Store. She enjoyed working and made many friends throughout her work experiences. However, after she retired, her favorite saying was, “Work is a four letter word and I don’t do four letter words”.

When John’s health began to decline she was dedicated to his care until his death in 2009. After returning to the Chattanooga area, Peggy enjoyed visiting with her family and attending church. She was always willing to help her friends and neighbors in need. While Peggy spent the majority of her life in the South, she kept close ties with her family in Pennsylvania and Montana. She was an avid letter writer, writing to family, friends, co-workers and cruise companions. Peggy kept everyone informed and up-to-date on her family and pets.

Peggy was a lover of animals. Her house was home to numerous cats and dogs. Most of them were strays and abandoned. She even had a pet skunk!

Therefore, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to McKamey Animal Shelter, 4500 N. Access Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37415.

The family is grateful to PACE of Chattanooga and The Health Center at Standifer Place for the care they provided for Peggy.

A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 24, in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Chaplain Reggie Yates officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. on Friday, May 24, at the funeral home.
