June Elizabeth Glass
My mother, June Elizabeth Glass, passed away peacefully at home in Red Bank, Tennessee, on May 18, 2024. She was surrounded by her family and her dogs. She was just four days away from her 84th birthday and 5 days away from her 68th wedding anniversary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Earl Vernon and Ora Lee Vernon; her sisters, Hazel West and Patricia Messer; and her daughter, Pamela Greene.
She is survived by her husband, Coach James Glass; her children Julia (David) Dupre and Jamie (Kim) Glass; her grandchildren Krystye Dalton, Jeremy Greene, Wesley Glass and Will Glass; and her great-grandson David James Dalton; and her puppies Hannah, Bella, Ginny and Lila.
My mother was an amazing woman. In a world where the best we can do is make a positive difference, she succeeded. She put her family first and waited until after we were all in school before going back to school to get her GED and then went on to get her undergraduate and master’s degrees. She taught school and worked as a librarian for many years, most of those being at Phillips High School in Bear Creek. She cared deeply for all her students, even the ones that drove her crazy, and did her best to help them all succeed. Despite a fear of heights, she would climb up on top of the press box to video the football games for the team. After she retired, she continued to support her former students by going and seeing their children when they played various sports.
My mom was an avid reader and loved going to church and working in her flower garden. When she could no longer get out there and dig, she enjoyed telling other people what to do and how to do it. One of her favorite activities was taking my dad to a local drive through fish place on Thursdays to get their catfish. They would then go and park in a shade somewhere to eat.
My mother was not perfect, but she was the perfect mother for me. She loved God, she loved her family, and she loved all the students she taught. She loved her neighbors and all her friends. She was a giver. She gave her time to volunteer, her money for the
causes she believed in, and her prayers for those she loved and those she didn’t like so much. She lived the good life, she fought the good fight, and she is home now.
A Celebration of Life will be held for my mother at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, on Saturday, June 22, at 11 a.m. and then at Phillips High School in Bear Creek, Al., on Saturday, July 27 at 2 p.m. We ask that instead of flowers that people can donate in her memory to the Phillips High School library in Bear Creek, Al.; St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, Tn.; or The Ronald McDonald House in Chattanooga, Tn.
