Camp Broadway students rehearse for tonight's Final Showcase
“The show must go on” and 41 students completing the two-week Camp Broadway program were ready to perform.
The “Making History” production tied in to the 100th anniversaries of the Tivoli Theatre and Memorial Auditorium with a survey of musicals spanning a generation. “We are making history with the next generation of performers,” said Ellie Austin, the Tivoli Theatre Foundation’s director of education.
In addition to the 41 students enrolled in the musical theatre course, there are seven students in a one-week technical theatre session that focuses on lighting, sound, and production.
Lamont J.
Whitaker, an actor and director, worked with the students, sharing his experiences on Broadway with the next generation of performing artists.
From the students’ perspective, these are some of the lessons learned:
- Learning and getting used to choreography.
- Moving from knowing how to shuffle to tap dancing.
- Dealing with the fast pace of costume changes.
The Education programs by the Tivoli Theatre Foundation link together teachers throughout the region, coming out of a siloed environment and sharing resources that produce a greater performing arts experience.
Camp Broadway is one of three education programs offered by the Tivoli Theatre Foundation. The Jewel Awards and Tivoli Education (TivEd) along with Camp Broadway focus on performance, technical skills, soft skills, performing arts experience and community engagement.
