Chattanooga Red Wolves Drop USL Jägermeister Cup In Penalty Kicks

  • Monday, July 22, 2024
The Chattanooga Red Wolves were on the road for Round 6 of the USL Jägermeister Cup to face One Knoxville SC. After a scoreless first half, Knoxville took a 1-0 lead through regulation time, but a late stoppage goal from Pedro Hernandez secured one point for the Red Wolves and sent the contest into penalty kicks, where Knoxville would pick up the extra point. The clubs will play their first league matches against one another on August 16th in Knoxville and will close out the 2024 series at CHI Memorial Stadium on October 5th.

The first half saw Chattanooga playing on the back foot as Knoxville racked up early shots.
The Red Wolves found opportunities in the 35th minute with a free kick from Mayele Malango that was blocked by the Knoxville defense while a free kick just moments later from Stefan Lukic was punched out by the goalkeeper.

Early substitutions were made in the 37th minute to replace Ualefi and Stefan Lukic with Declan Watters and Omar Hernandez as the former Red Wolves each suffered collisions with Knoxville players.

Chattanooga began to press aggressively in the 40th minute to get on the board first before halftime. The Red Wolves nearly found the back of the net with a shot from Ropapa Mensah that went past two fallen defenders and the Knoxville keeper but was blocked at the last second by a Jayden Crisler.

TJ Bush held firm for Chattanooga, making key saves throughout the half including a late save in first half stoppage time to maintain the nil-nil scoreline.

The clubs came out for the second scoreless with both sides pushing for a goal. Chattanooga found themselves more even in shots with Knoxville as the match grew more physical with several players picking up cards.

Leo Folla would get booked in the 73rd minute and would receive a second one just three minutes later, resulting in a match ejection. With one man down and momentum, One Knoxville got one past TJ Bush to take a late lead in the 79th minute.

The Red Wolves looked to recover as the match headed into stoppage time. In the 90’+2nd minute of play, Chevone Marsh danced through a group of One Knox players and made a shot that was bounced back into play by the keeper; Pedro Hernandez found the rebound from and slotted it home to tie the match in stoppage time. The whistle blew with the sides tied and the match headed into penalty kicks, per Jägermeister Cup rules.

Chattanooga went up in second round penalties after both sides scored in the first round. The third saw goals for both teams, while the fourth gave Knoxville an opportunity to even the score when Declan Watters’ shot went above the net. Neither side managed a goal in the fifth round, but Knoxville went up in the sixth, and Owen Green’s attempt went off target. Chattanooga would end the match with one point as Knoxville took the extra.

The Red Wolves will face Union Omaha in league play on July 27th on the road before returning home on Saturday, August 3rd for a match featuring live music and celebrating the 125th anniversary of Coca-Cola in Chattanooga. Tickets are on sale now.
