James Owen “Jim” Rice
James Owen “Jim” Rice, 91, died on August 11, 2024.
He was born in Bogalusa, La., on March 9, 1933. His parents moved to Red Bank, Tennessee a few years later. In 1953, during the Korean War, Jim enlisted in the Navy, where he served for four years before returning to Chattanooga. Here he married Sandra Smith in 1966 and saw his sons born. He spent many years as an insurance claims adjuster and was a longtime volunteer with the Boy Scouts as assistant scoutmaster and scoutmaster, receiving the Silver Beaver award in 1995. In retirement, he took up amateur radio, and held an extra class license KG4SHY.
Among many dogs, he took in a Boston Terrier named Java, and a Tibetan Spaniel named Fast Eddie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Hubbie; and his brothers, Kenneth and Quentin.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sandra; children, Jim (Barbara) and Matt (Lindsay); nephews: Richard, Ken, and Garry; and many cousins.
He was a longtime member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and served there in many roles. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, or McKamey Animal Center.
Visitation is from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Bruce Clark officiating. Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
