The African American Education and Heritage Museum first gallery exhibition featuring the slave collection of local African American Artist Jerry Allen, with special entertainer saxophonist Swayyvo, opens Thursday evening.
The opening is from 6-8 p.m. at the Chattanooga Civic Center at Mountainside 701 Hooker Road (the former and historic Piney Woods Elementary School). The tour is free.
Visitors may tour phase I of the museum and enjoy conversation with Mr. Allen, local civil rights activist Johnny Holloway, and live entertainment by local artist and saxophonist Swayyvo. All of Mr. Allen's art is for sale and 25 percent of all sales will be donated to the Alton Park Development Corporation Scholarship Fund for senior students with a minimum overall GPA of 2.75.
Mr. Allen's slave collection and other art will remain on exhibit until Nov. 19.
The African American Education and Heritage Museum's next gallery exhibition will feature the Civil War Collection presented by the American Legion Post #2091. African history courses are offered by the museum's education department instructor, Harold Bryson, MSEd. Enrollment is now open by emailing AfricanHistory@APDC98.org.
