U.S. Air Force Veteran Held Long Career With The FAA

Alex Malon, 89, of Ooltewah, Tennessee, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

Mr. Malon was a first generation Ukrainian-American, born in Blairstown, NJ on Dec. 23, 1934, son of the late Alexander and Nancy Malon. He was a graduate of Blairstown High School, Atlantic Community College, and Stockton State University of New Jersey. He was a Korean War veteran serving as an air traffic controller in the United States Air Force. After discharge, he entered the Federal Aviation Administration and worked as an air traffic controller at Norfolk, Va.; Atlantic City, NJ; and Philadelphia, Pa He then worked at the FAA Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ, in the research and development of new air traffic systems and automation of the current air traffic system before transferring to Nashville, as the assistant manager. He spent the last five years of his 37-year career as the manager of the Chattanooga, Airport Tower, before retiring in December 1989. He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church and American Legion Post #258.

Alex enjoyed hunting, tennis, golf, and enjoyed traveling to see family members. The past several years he especially enjoyed playing numerous games of cards and cornhole with his friends at Ashwood Square.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Maryann (Tari), daughter of the late James and Lillian Schultz of Stroudsburg, Pa.; brothers Howard and William Malon, and sisters Mary Bosse and Nancy Hickey.

Survivors include Jean M. Van Dyck, and husband Fred of Snellville, Ga.; son, Scott A. Malon and wife Donna of Senoia, Ga.; granddaughter Alexandra Hurlman and husband Bryan; three grandsons, Garrett Van Dyck, Taylor Malon and partner Samantha Potente, Christian Malon and partner Jessica Yarbrough; great-granddaughter, Emery Malon (daughter of Taylor and Samantha); and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, Sept. 30, from 4-8 p.m., at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, Valley View Chapel, 7414 Old Lee Highway, Chattanooga.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 10:30 a.m., mass at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 7111 Lee Highway, Chattanooga. Interment will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice.
