St. Jude School announces that it has been chosen as only the second school in Tennessee and the first elementary school to host the Freedom Flag on Patriot's Day, Sept. 11.
The Freedom Flag Foundation chose St. Jude for this honor after an application from its third-grade teacher, Mrs. Katlyn Darling.
Officials said, "The Freedom Flag Foundation exists to establish the Freedom Flag as a national symbol of remembrance for Sept. 11, 2001, and to support educational efforts of teaching future generations about the tragic events and many lives lost on that date.
"More than just a day of remembrance, our event is an educational opportunity.
In addition to oral and visual presentations, the day offers a unique chance to interact with a priceless artifact from Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. The presentation of colors - the flags of the United States, the State of Tennessee and the Freedom Flag - adds a patriotic touch. Educators have praised the 10 symbolic elements of the Freedom Flag as an effective teaching tool, helping the current generation of students understand the complex sequence of events of 9/11, a day they were not yet born to witness."
Senator Bo Watson, Deputy County Mayor Cory Gearrin, UTC ROTC, City Traffic Patrol, City Patrol Car, City K9 Unit, City Drone Team and the Chattanooga Fire Department will be a part of the day's activities, which include both student and public-directed programming. The student programming begins at 9 a.m., and the public programming begins at 6:15 p.m.
