Bradley Central Wrestlers Win Big Over Walker Valley

  • Wednesday, January 15, 2025

Bradley Central tuned up for Thursday's Senior Night festivities in a big way inside “The Jim” scoring a 55-21 Alumni Night victory Tuesday over the visiting Walker Valley Mustangs.

The Bears will host East Hamilton in a final workout on Senior Nightbefore next week's region duals at Rhea County

“I thought we wrestled pretty well overall. We had guys open up and push the pace for multiple takedowns and bonus points. And then I had guys who didn't,” said Bears Head coach Rusty Bryant. “That's got to be something that's consistent across the board. Next week at the region duals, it matters. Those extra bonus points matter.”

The Mustangs picked up only four wins out of 14 bouts and must find some answers quickly to find some needed intensity before the Cleveland Blue Raiders make a call to “The Stable” Thursday.

“Too many instances where their guys were wrestling with more intensity than our guys. We talked to the team and challenged them to never let somebody want to win more than they do. If you have that desire and you're going to wrestle with that intensity higher than your opponent, you're going to give yourself more opportunities to win matches,” Mustangs assistant coach Adam Rains stated. “We do have some technique things we need to clean up, but on the bouts that were clear intensity issues then we have to clean those up before any technique things.”

After Bradley Central's Kyle Hogg opened the night with a tech fall win at 150 pounds, Jacob Gentry, Trent Crisp, Wiley Suskawicz and Isaac Akins all pinned their opponent to the mat giving the Bears a quick 29-0 lead only five bouts into the match.

Walker Valley broke up the shutout at 215 when Troy Dyszkiewicz wrestled to a decision win. Jeremiah Townsend made it 29-9 with a pin at 285.

Bradley pick up six points the easy way with a forfeit at 106 and took a 41-9 lead when Bryson Moats got the pin at 113. Walker Valley's Michael Rich picked up the first of two Mustangs' pins with a win at 120. Isaac DeCampo earned the only other Walker Valley pin at 126 to make the score 41-21.

Landon Goins put momentum back on the side of the Bears with a pin at 132. At 138 pounds, the Bears added three more point to the tally with a decision win by Houston Davenport. Brandon Harris closed out the night for the Bears cruising to a tech fall win at 144 to make it a 55-21 final.

“We're where I thought we would be” Bryant said of the Bears' development. “Again, there are a few guys who are continuing to progress, but then there are a few guys who are still a little inconsistent in my opinion and need to clean some stuff up. We have the Blackmans, the Brentwoods and the Summits, that stuff had got to matter.”

The Mustangs understand they have a tough row to hoe with just one day to make ready for the four-time defending Cleveland Blue Raiders.

“We knew what we were coming into here. They (Bears) always bring the

intensity,” said Rains. We were hoping our guys would rise to the occasion. But, some of our bad habits seemed to have showed tonight. We have Cleveland on Thursday at our place, so it's not getting any easier this week.”
