Winners of Southern Adventist University’s Concerto Competition will be featured in concert with the university’s Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Laurie Redmer Cadwallader, on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 4 p.m. at Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists on campus.
Established in 1990, the annual contest features gifted young instrumentalists from across the region who auditioned and were chosen to present solos alongside a full orchestra. This year’s finalists include Jared Anderson playing Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra; I.
Andante & Allegro by Henri Tomasi; Joao Flores playing Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, op. 26; I. Allegro by Max Bruch; Evan Kramer playing Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra; III. Finale. Maestoso – Rondo by Launy Grøndahl; Daphne Jiang playing Violin Concerto, op. 14; I. Allegro by Samuel Barber; Nathaniel Miller playing Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor, op. 1; I. Vivace – Moderato by Sergei Rachmaninoff; and Eric Xie playing Piano Concerto in G major, M. 83; I. Allegremente by Maurice Ravel.
Two of Southern’s own student musicians also earned this top honor: Luke Kwon, junior biochemistry major, will be playing Cello Concerto in B minor, op. 104, B. 191; I. Allegro by Antonin Dvorák; and Bradley Peterson, sophomore music performance major, will be playing Symphony for Organ in G minor, op. 42, no. 2; V. Finale by Charles-Marie Widor.
