Michelle Sturtz Smith
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michelle Sturtz Smith, 74, on February 6, 2025, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Michelle was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, whose kindness, dedication, and passion for life touched the lives of many.
Born on Sept. 22, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio, Michelle was the third oldest of eight siblings, four girls and four boys. After graduating from Las Cruces High School in 1968, she moved to Ocala, Florida, to pursue her nursing education. Michelle dedicated over 30 years to Munroe Regional Medical Center, where she began her career as a registered nurse and later retired as the director of patient accounting. Throughout her career, Michelle demonstrated a strong commitment to personal and professional growth, earning her master’s in Management in 2005.
Michelle had a rich and fulfilling life outside of her work. She was an avid traveler, with favorite trips to France, The Holy Land, Australia, and New York. She also enjoyed reading, having been an enthusiastic member of her Book Club for over 20 years. A talented painter, Michelle found joy in expressing her creativity and loved entertaining friends and family, especially during the Christmas season, which she cherished — particularly the tradition of the 12 Days of Christmas.
A devout member of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church for over 40 years, Michelle’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was also deeply committed to her community, serving with Altrusa International of Ocala for over 20 years and as a trustee with the Altrusa International District Three Foundation for seven years. Her passion for helping others extended far beyond her family, and she touched many through her work with these organizations.
Michelle was preceded in death by her parents, Rodney and Geneva Sturtz; her sister, Mary; and her brothers: James, Johnny, Paul, and Joe.
Michelle is survived by her children, Jennifer (Aaron) Melda and Nick Smith; her three cherished grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Allie, and Knox Melda; and her two sisters, Bobbye Eddy and Suzanne Stephenson. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m., at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Blessed Trinity Catholic Church or Altrusa International of Ocala Foundation in Michelle’s honor.
