The Lee University Percussion Ensemble
The Lee University Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Andy Harnsberger and Dr. Caitlin Jones, will host its spring concert on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Pangle Hall.
The performance will include pieces such as “Blue Burn” by Jospeh Tompkins, “Turbines” by Elijah Caliguiri, “Relative Riffs” by Alejandro Vinao, and “Kyoto” by John Psathas.
The concert will conclude with Dr. Harnsberger, professor of percussion, and Dr. Jones, instructor of percussion, performing the world premiere of “The Turning Tides” by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. This piece, largely funded by Lee University, is a masterwork for two marimbas and a percussion trio.
The Percussion Ensemble performs a wide variety of music written expressly for percussion, which allows students to experience a variety of music including contemporary genres, world music, and improvisation. Selections range from chamber works for three to four performers to works utilizing many instruments. The group presents fall and spring concerts annually.
Along with conducting percussion ensemble, Dr. Harnsberger is in demand as a recitalist and clinician across the country and internationally, presenting clinics and masterclasses at as many as 40 universities per year. He is also a performing artist and clinician for Malletech Instruments and Mallets, Remo Drum Heads, Sabian Cymbals, Ltd., and Grover Pro Percussion.
Dr. Jones is a professional percussionist who has an active career as a performer and educator. In 2020, she gave the world premiere of “The Long Road” for solo marimba by Dr. Harnsberger and professionally recorded this work with GreenHaus Productions. She has presented at Percussive Arts Society Days of Percussion and throughout the U.S. on various topics, including health and wellness for musicians.
The event is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. Livestream viewing will also be available at leeu.live/. Pangle Hall is on the corner of Church Street and Central Avenue.
