FAIRFIELD GLADES, Tenn. — Building on a strong runner-up finish at the Burke Invitational to open the new season last week, Walker Valley galloped away with the championship trophy at the Golf Capital Classic Tuesday.
"We won with a 317, so it wasn't our best day," remarked veteran head coach Will Campbell, whose Mustangs fired a 303 in the season opener.
"The (Lake Tansi) course was tough. Only six scores in the 70s out of 59 players and we carded three of those.
"Our guys battled and didn’t get frustrated when things didn’t go their way," he assessed.
"Proud of their effort. It was a convincing win against a traditionally tough field at Lake Tansi."
Leading the Herd win was sophomore Baylor transfer Drew Thompson, who earned tournament low-medalist honors, firing an even-par 72.
Junior Harrison Yost, also a 2024 TSSAA State quailier, finished fifth overall with a 6-over-par 78
Freshman Cody Walter was right behind with a 7-over 79, shooting even par on the front nine.
Luke Finnell rounded out the Mustang tally with an 88, while Colton Widener carded a 93 in support.
Walker Valley left the rest of the 10-team field in the dust, dropping runner-up Cookeville White (335) by 18 strokes.
Warren County (340), Stone Memorial (342) and Upperman (349) rounded out the Top 5.
Cookeville Red (357), Rhea County (366), Cumberland County (367), White County (382) and Livingston Academy (408) completed the field
