Four Killed, 1 Critical, In Tellico Plains Shooting

  • Tuesday, October 31, 2000

Four people are dead and another critically hurt after a shooting spree at Tellico Plains in Monroe County.

The incident broke out about 4 p.m. Saturday when Mary Ann Presley, 40, was trying to move out on her 60-year-old boyfriend, Cleo Colvin.

Authorities say Colvin first shot the girl friend, then he opened up on a man and his two nephews who were helping her move out of the trailer.

Three of the four were killed and the other, Tommy Staney, is in critical condition.

Killed were Ms. Presley, Garland Staney and Ronald Gwillianes.

Ms. Presley made it inside her car and tried to drive away, but she died as the car crashed.

Police say Colvin apparently fired a shot toward an approaching police car, then he went into the back room of a friend's trailer and killed himself with the gun.

The Tellico Plains Police Department wrapped up their first murder case in over three decades, and the TBI was doing a followup probe.
