Former Sequatchie Sheriff Charged With Illegal Hunting

  • Wednesday, December 14, 2005

Former Sequatchie County, Tenn. Sheriff Joe May was caught illegally hunting from his truck in Hamilton County.

Tennessee state law says it's illegal to actually shoot or hunt deer from a motorized vehicle.

May paid off his citation rather than appearing in court.

TWRA Officer Greg Atchley wrote the ticket. He says the former Sheriff was in a truck with buddies riding on some Bowater lease property along the Hamilton/Sequatchie line. The Sheriff was holding a loaded rifle when he was stopped.

Atchley said the sheriff got out of the truck and said, "I used to be the Sequatchie County Sheriff."

Atchley told him, "Well, you're in Hamilton County and you're breaking the law."

The former Sheriff paid a $10 fine plus court costs, which ran him about $150.

Atchley says this is the 3rd time the former Sheriff has been caught hunting illegally. Atchley said once he shot a so-called "robo-deer," a robotic deer wildlife officers use in stings to catch illegal road hunters.
