A 23-year-old rafting guide drowned Saturday on the Ocoee River while trying to rescue some passengers.

Stan Guy had grown up on the Ocoee and was a guide for the Sunburst Rafting Company in Benton.

He was leading a group when another raft got stuck and was in danger of flipping. He was trying to swim to the raft when he went under in the swift current and became trapped in rocks.

It happened just east of the Ocoee Whitewater Center in the area of the "Blue Hole."

He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He graduated from Polk County High School in 2000 and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and Tennessee Technological University.

He was an avid kayaker and had guided for the past six years.

His parents are Larry and Phylliss Guy of Benton. His sisters are Cam Guy and Meg Guy, both of Benton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Revs. Chuck Jones and Dwight Guy officiating. Graveside services will follow in Old Ocoee Cemetery with Rev. Kinsel Hooker officiating and with a white dove release concluding the service. Matt Lane, Ben Lawson, Andy Kinser, Adam Kinser, Evan Crocker and Guy Triplett will serve as pallbearers.

His family requests that donations may be made to the Stan Guy Memorial Fund at Benton Banking Company which will fund Swift Water Rescue Training.
