George Ayers Cress, 86, of Chattanooga, died on Tuesday, January 1, 2008, in a local hospital.
He was born in Anniston, Ala., to Glen H. Cress, Sr. and Lola Ayers King. Educated at Emory University and the University of Georgia, he moved to Chattanooga in 1951 to join the faculty of the University of Chattanooga where he taught for 56 years. He served as chair of the Department of Art and was Guerry Professor Emeritus of Art. His lifelong creative force as a painter was both unique and prolific. He continued to challenge himself with new directions throughout his life. His paintings been exhibited across North America and are in many private and public collections in the United States and Europe. He has received numerous awards and recognitions as an artist and art educator throughout his illustrious career.
He is survived by nephews Glen H. Cress III and Dean E. Cress; nieces Lola Francis Beaty and Cynthia Ann Philips; and numerous cousins. Moreover, there are literally thousands of friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives have been profoundly influenced by their relationships with George Cress.
While countless words could be written here about his professional accomplishments, the character of George Cress was most transparent in his many acts of kindness, generosity, loyalty, and love for family, friends, and students - many of which are known only to the recipients. While his painting will always be known for its richness of color and light, the richness and light of his personal relationships will most memorably mark George Cress as an exceptional human being.
A celebration of his life by family and friends will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home chapel with Dean Cress and Bill Loveless officiating. A memorial service is being planned for a later date to accommodate friends and former students both near and far.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UTC, Friends of the Gallery.
