UTC Sorority Member Involved In Hazing Gets Diversion

  • Tuesday, June 29, 2010

A UTC sorority member involved in a hazing incident that left another student hospitalized has been granted pre-trial diversion.

Seirra Smith pleaded guilty to assault, but the charge can be removed from the record if there are no further problems for a year.

She appeared before Criminal Court Judge Don Poole.

She was one of five Delta Sigma Theta members charged in the June 2009 incident in which Jasmine Johnson said she was hazed at a UTC bookstore, the Brainerd High School track and near Finley Stadium.

She said syrup and milk were poured over her head. Then eggs were placed on her body and she was punched in the chest and stomach to break the eggs.

She said she was also beaten on her legs and knuckles with a wooden paddle.

Her injuries included bruising, cuts and a concussion.
