  • Monday, May 9, 2011

In the aftermath of the April 27 tornado outbreak in the Chattanooga Valley, The Salvation Army continues to respond to new disasters that are impending along the Mississippi River in West Tennessee.

Personnel from the Salvation Army Chattanooga Area Command departed on Monday morning to assist ongoing efforts in the Memphis area as the floodwaters continue to rise.

To date, the Memphis Area Command disaster response has provided over 3,600 hot meals and over 10,000 snacks and drinks. At this time, Salvation Army Mobile Feeding Units (canteens) from Memphis, Jackson, Tn., and Owensboro, Ky., serve in those area affected by the flooding.

Kimberly George, Divisional Public Informational officer and Chattanooga director of Marketing and Development for The Salvation Army, said, "As we continue to assess the needs in the Memphis area, we pray for the best but prepare for the worst."

These additional disasters require additional resources to meet the ever-increasing demand on services.

Officials said, "Foremost, we ask for your prayers as we serve in the many disaster affected areas. We also remind you that there are a variety of ways in which they can donate monetarily to the relief effort."

Donors can call 800 SAL-ARMY (725-2769). Text to give is also available by texting the word “give” to 80888. A $10 donation will appear on your cell phone bill.

Other monetary donations should be sent to The Salvation Army, 696 Jackson Avenue, Memphis, Tn. 38105. Please mark them "May Floods."
