Andrew “Andy” J. Shrum, Jr., died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at his Hixson home, on Friday, November 7, 2014. 

He was born Dec. 27, 1930, in Palmer, Tn.  Andrew was a very proud naval veteran who served his country during the Korean War on the USS Radford. He was most proud of his service to the Girls Preparatory School for over 33 years. Andy has been a member of Hixson United Methodist Church for over 50 years and a loyal member of the Sam McConnell Class.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Della Gibbs Shrum; sisters and spouses, Mary Ellen (Paul) Curtis and Peggy (George) Deakins and an infant brother, Moses Shrum.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Nix Shrum; children, Debbie Rains and Mark (Michelle) Shrum; grandchildren, Josh Yarbrough, Will Rains, Jordan Shrum and Luke Shrum; great grandson, Alex Rains; sister, Betty (Harold) Ball and several nieces and nephews and their families.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, and 1:30-3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

A celebration of life service for Andrew will follow at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Reed Shell officiating.  Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. 

The family requests that any memorials to Andrew be made to the Girls Preparatory School, Hixson United Methodist Church, or Avalon Hospice of Chattanooga.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
