Elder Jones, 96, died peacefully, surrounded by family on October 19, 2015 at NHC in Bristol, Virginia.

Elder was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a graduate of Central High School and McKenzie Business College. He retired as an assistant vice president with Siskin Steel and Supply Company after 37 years of service.

Elder served in World War II as a captain in the US Army-Air Force. He was a B-24 pilot having flown fifty missions over Europe and Romania for the Fifteenth Air Force. He was awarded the Distinguish Flying Cross, for air medals and the Presidential Unit Citation. Despite his respected military career, when once asked how he would like to be remembered, he stated, “I would like to be remembered as somebody who always wanted to do the right thing.”  

Elder and his late wife, Peggie were members of Brainerd United Methodist Church for 67 years and founding members of the Friendship Class.  He enjoyed gardening, golf and travel.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Peggie Jones, parents, Willis and Gertrude,  sisters, Rhoda White, Edith Hawkins and brother, Marvin Jones.

Survivors are his four children, Tina (Ed) Hitt, Bristol, Va., Elder Garrison Jones and fiancée Carol Parsons, Cullowhee, NC, Jill Wolfe, Cashiers, NC, and Nina Jones, Atlanta; three grandchildren, Sara Beth Hitt (Kris) Versteegen, Brandon (Allison) Wolfe and Preston Wolfe; great-granddaughter, Mayne; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 1:30 p.m. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
