Brown's Tavern
The Hamilton County 200th Birthday Committee, the Lookout Valley Neighborhood Association and the Chief John Ross Chapter, NSDAR invite the public to join them for a special ‘Bring Your Own Camp Chair’ program on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. at the historic Brown’s Tavern in Lookout Valley. Dr. Anthony Hodges, local historian and historical preservationist, will lead a program weaving a narrative regarding Brown’s Tavern, Brown’s Ferry, Lookout Valley and the history of the region during the past two centuries.
The program will conclude with an exciting announcement regarding the future of Brown’s Tavern, officials said.
Following the program, tours of Brown’s Landing will be offered for interested attendees.
Linda Moss Mines, Hamilton County historian, said, “For those of us who love history and are emerged in the commemoration of Hamilton County’s 200th Birthday, Brown’s Tavern is a foundational element in local history. Prior to the charter granted for the establishment of Hamilton County on the Oct. 25, 1819, John Brown, a member of the Cherokee Nation, was already an established businessman in the region having built Brown’s Tavern in 1803 and simultaneously operating a nearby ferry. Ironically, the Ferry served a one of the departure points for many of the Cherokee who would begin the Trail of Tears by transport on the Tennessee River. The site also holds great significance for its role in the U. S. Civil War. Dr. Hodges is one of the most knowledgeable historians in the region regarding this site and we are honored that he will not only speak to community residents about its history but will share with us the exciting plans for its future.”
“The Chief John Ross Chapter, NSDAR enjoys a special relationship with the Brown’s Tavern site and with Dr. Hodges’ work to preserve the site,” noted Immediate Past Regent Jessica Dumitru. “Chief John Ross and his wife, Quatie, were married at the tavern and we strive to keep his legacy alive, reminding Hamilton County residents that he was the longest-serving Chief of the Cherokee Nation.”
Brown’s Tavern is located at 703 Brown’s Ferry Road, adjacent to the Lookout Valley Elementary School.
