McCallie Wins Second Straight State Swimming Title

Saturday, February 8, 2020

After a 2019 Tennessee State Swimming & Diving title in which McCallie won four individual events, the Blue Tornado earned six individual and relay team State Championships this weekend at the 2020 Tennessee Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association State Meet at the University of Tennessee.

The race for the team crown came down to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.

McCallie won the event, while Baylor placed fifth, and the two rivals ended up tying for the overall team crown, each with 248 points.

The State Championship is the 21st overall for McCallie’s aquatics program.

McCallie senior Will Jackson was the dominant swimmer in the meet. The future University of Tennessee swimmer won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, defending his 500 freestyle title from a year ago. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team and the 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Also claiming state titles for McCallie were sophomore Sam Powe in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard medley relay team of Powe, senior Reece Gallagher and juniors Kyle Berry and Conor Kinley in a school-record time of 1:32.99.

Scoring additional points for the Blue Tornado team total were Powe with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle, Kinley with an eighth-place finish in the 50 freestyle, and Gallagher with a seventh- and eighth-place finish in the 100 backstroke and the 200 individual medley respectively.
