Max Leo Huffman, Jr., age 72, of Harrison, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2020, in a local nursing home.
He was born November 13, 1947, to Max Leo Huffman, Sr. and Hazel Huffman in Columbus, Mississippi. Max was a 1966 graduate of Liberty High School in Ethelsville, Alabama and graduated from Midstate Medical Academy in 1967 in Nashville with an associate's degree in Medical Technology. It was in school in Nashville that he met Suzanne Hawthorne of Red Bank and they were married August 3, 1968.
Max served as a Hospital Corpsman, 2nd class in the Navy during the Vietnam War. From 1969 until 1971 he served at the Naval Base in Charleston, South Carolina; then in Groton, Connecticut at the Naval Submarine Base. As medical laboratory personnel on the subbase hospital he was awarded Sailor of the Month for July 1971.
Max worked as a medical technologist in various hospitals. His final service to patients was at Parkridge Hospital from 1978 to 1990.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Hazel Huffman; sister, Judy Huffman Astrov.
Max is survived by his wife of 52 years, Suzanne Hawthorne Huffman of Harrison; son, Jeffrey (Wakaba) Huffman, and grandson, Leo of Seattle, Washington; brother, Jerry Wayne (Martha) Huffman of Brooksville, Mississippi; sisters-in-law, Deanne Hawthorne of Harrison, Ginger (Lamar) Ridge of Falling Water; brother-in-law, Steve (Cindy) Hawthorne of Harrison; several nieces and a nephew.
The family would like to express profound gratitude to the staff of Bradley Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Cleveland for the loving, wonderful care they have given Max in the last eight years.
A memorial service to celebrate Max’s life will be held at a later date to be announced.
