J. Lamar Owens of Austin, Texas, left this world on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Brookedale West Lake at the age of 82.

 

Lamar was a Chattanooga native who had moved to Austin, Tx., this year to be closer to his daughter. He was a 1956 graduate of Central High School. He was in the Army National Guard for nine years and loved being of service to his country. He spoke of his Army days as the best days of his life. He earned a B.S. in Business Management from Covenant College on Lookout

Mountain.

 

He was a member of the Choo Choo Barbershop Chorus for 20 years and sang in the Scenic

City Sound quartet for 18 years. Lamar was also a long time member of Brainerd Hills Baptist

Church where he sang in the church choir. Lamar was a singer his entire life beginning when he was young when he performed in his high school. Even in his final days, he was singing.

 

Lamar was always a daredevil and at the age of 77 he decided to skydive at 14,000 feet. He also was an avid traveler who in the last ten years traveled to over twenty countries. He will always be remembered as a doting father and grandfather, a proud patriot, an Army veteran, a talented singer, a sharp dresser, a movie buff, a music connoisseur, and the ultimate gentleman.

 

He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Lamar Owens, wife, Janice Owens, mother, Mildred Owens Johnson, father, R. Leonard Owens, uncle, Earl Owens, and cousin, Ward Cecil Jackson.

 

He is survived, deeply loved and dearly missed by his daughter, Kelly Daghlian, granddaughters, Emma and Katia Daghlian, and son-in-law, Diko Daghlian. He is also survived by dear friends, Mathon and Evelyn Culpepper and David Petty.

 

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.
