For a third time this season, Covenant women's basketball freshman forward Destiny Mergilles was named the USA South Rookie of the Week, announced the league on Monday.
Mergilles also earned the honor on Jan. 25 and Feb. 8.
The 5-foot-11 freshman from Deerfield Beach, Fla. had a monster week in leading Covenant to a crucial USA South split at Huntingdon. She averaged a double-double of 20.5 points while shooting 70.3 percent from the field, with 13.0 rebounds to go along with 4.0 blocks and 1.0 assists per game.
In a 69-50 loss, Mergilles posted a double-double of a career-high 24 points with 15 rebounds with two blocks. In a 70-42 victory on Saturday, Mergilles again notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds with six blocks, two assists, and one steal.
Mergilles' six blocks in the win over Huntingdon are the most for a Covenant player in the NCAA-era.
The two double-doubles for Mergilles gave her eight on the year. She leads Covenant in scoring (12.5 PPG) and rebounding (8.0 RPG). Mergilles still leads the USA South in total rebounds (160), while ranking eighth in rebounds per game. Her 38 blocks on the year leads the USA South and is already inside the top-10 for a single-season in program history.
Covenant (6-14, 5-7 USA South) concludes the regular season this weekend against Wesleyan.
Covenant men's soccer freshman Knox Gibson was named the USA South Rookie of the Week, for the period ending Feb. 21, announced the conference on Monday.
It is the first career weekly honor for Gibson.
A freshman midfielder from Lakeland, Fla., Gibson came up big in Covenant's 3-1 win over Brevard last Saturday -- the Scots' lone match of the week. Gibson scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 66th minute, assisted by Mercer Stout, to give Covenant a 2-1 lead. He later assisted on Jake Major's goal in the 88th minute that sealed the win for the Scots.
The goal was Gibson's first collegiate score.
Gibson's play helped the Scots stay unbeaten in USA South play and run their streak of conference regular season victories to 20.
Covenant (2-1, 2-0 USA South) will travel to Piedmont on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
