Marcus Weldon Moore

Marcus Weldon Moore passed away on February 24, 2021 at the age of 56 from metastatic oral cancer.

He leaves his brother, Curtis Moore and his wife Barbara of Haslet, TX; sister, Susan (Moore) McGann and her husband Patrick of Rock Hill, SC; and two children -- Allen Moore and his wife Caroline of Atlanta, GA, and Jacob Moore and his wife Bri of Athens, GA.

Marcus was born in Meridian, Ms. on Jan. 10, 1965 to the late Jonathon and Evelyn (Newcomb) Moore. He spent most of his childhood years in rural Hardin County, Tn. He loved the outdoors and spent as much time as possible hunting and fishing near his home. Marcus’s parents raised him and his siblings with strong values and a rigorous work ethic; attributes which remained with him throughout his life.

Besides his outdoor pursuits, Marcus was also an avid reader. Among the many novels he enjoyed, one set proved quite formative. All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot and the sequels which followed led to Marcus’s decision to become a country veterinarian. Marcus completed the pre-vet program at Tennessee Tech, followed by vet school at the University of Tennessee. After graduating, he began working with a large-animal practice in Commerce, Ga.

After practicing in Commerce for a few years, he and his family moved to Dalton, Ga., where he joined the staff of Dalton Animal Care. Dalton and the surrounding area provided the perfect environment to raise his two sons, and to indulge in his outdoor pursuits. He spent countless hours hiking and biking on the Pinhoti Trail, and turkey hunting in the Johns Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Tragically, Marcus developed cancer in 2019 which he could not overcome. Marcus was an active member in his church and was known for his committed involvement in the biking and trail community.

Public visitation will be Friday, March 5, from 5-8 p.m. at Fellowship Bible Church in Dalton, Ga.

The funeral service will be Saturday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Bible Church with a visitation immediately preceding the service at 1 p.m.

The family requests donations be made to Providence Ministries, Samaritan’s Purse, or Moody Bible Radio – Chattanooga station in lieu of flowers.

Due to the national health crisis and the COVID-19 virus, masks must be worn properly at all times and social distancing must be observed when visiting the funeral home.

Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.pondersfuneralhome.com.

Arrangements are by Ponders Funeral Home, 138 Melrose Dr., Dalton, GA 30721.
