Alice J. Hockman, 84, of Athens, passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. Alice was born on Sept. 10, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pa. to the late William and Emma Hayfield Johnson.
Alice and Larry moved their family of six to Athens in 1970 to open Hockman Pool Company. The pool store was originally in the old Goodfreind’s Store located in the downtown square. Owning the only pool supply business in the area, Alice and Larry provided pool chemicals to the community and built many pools in the surrounding area for over 55 years.
Along with her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Larry R. Hockman; son, Brent L. Hockman; great-granddaughter, Makayla; and her son-in-law, Chuck Skipper.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her sister, Martha Walker, of Tucson, Az.; her four children, Blake (Marie) Hockman, of Athens, Bonnie (David) Cagle, of Athens, Jane Skipper, of Athens, and Jill (Kyle) Rider, of Knoxville; her grandchildren, Heidi, Heather, Whitney, Madyson, Brandi, Amanda, Matthew and Brett; great-grandchildren, Karlee, Kaylee, Ander, Silas, Blake, Chevy, Larry, Cole, Briley, Macy, Taylor and Noelle; along with a host of extended family and friends.
A memorial gathering will be held on Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. at the Hockman Home at 118 County Road 654 in Athens. There will be a hayride and bonfire in memory of Alice. The family asks that anyone wishing to attend would bring their own chair.
