The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team opens play Monday at the Nexus Collegiate in The Bahamas. The three-day, 54-hole event is the first of the spring portion of the Mocs schedule.
The lineup includes Alex Cobb, Paul Conroy, Parker Highsmith, Gabe Hunter and Braedon Wear. Leon Bader is teeing up as an individual. Conroy and Wear were exempt from qualifying after exemplary play during the fall slate. The quartet of Cobb, Highsmith, Hunter and Bader earned a stamp on their passports during a competitive and grueling qualifying run.
“Our six that are headed to the Bahamas qualified through 90 holes of competition,” interim head coach Miles Moseley shared.
“They earned their shots. It will be a challenging three days against a good field.
“We’re excited to get the spring started.”
Conroy (15 under) and Wear (-6) are both under par for the season. There are just three instances in the Mocs annals where a student-athlete managed a hole season under par. Two came from current PGA TOUR member Stephan Jaeger in 2011 (-1) and 2012 (-22), while the other was turned in by All-American Jonathan Hodge in 2008 (-9).
Freshman Parker Highsmith is making his first career start, while junior Alex Cobb’s is the first of 2021-22. It’ll be the third opening of the campaign for Hunter with Conroy and Wear starting off all five to begin the season.
